Alkalising foods

In my book, I suggest that you follow an alkalising diet. Basically, it means eating a lot more plants and a lot less animal protein. I don’t suggest that you use ready-made foods unless you check that they don’t contain additives such as emulsifiers, which have a detrimental effect on the gut. My recommendation is to use real foods and balance your intake of acidifying and alkalising foods as far as possible, so that the net figure (PRAL) is 0.

If you’d like to follow this advice, you may find it helpful to download the spreadsheet (link below) that I’ve created for my own use. This gives you the Potential Renal Acid Load for 100 grams/100 mls of many common foods/liquids. You can add any other foods you want to check using the nutrient file in the Australian Foods Database–Release 2, which you can download from - https://www.foodstandards.gov.au/science-data/monitoringnutrients/afcd/australian-food-composition-database-download-excel-files

Water filter

Watersco water filter

I recommend using a water filter to filter out all sorts of toxins in tap water. This includes chlorine, which can kill the bacteria in your gut. About 70% of our immune system is centred in the gut. A healthy microbiome can help to support you through cancer and prevent recurrences. WatersCo water filters also remove heavy metals, pesticides, chemicals, reducing your toxic load. They remove parasites, and remineralise and alkalise the water too. I love the taste of the water too.

WatersCo produce a range of water filters to cater for every budget. The smallest one is ideal for travelling, the next size is a jug that fits in your fridge door, and then there are 5 litre and 10 litre benchtop versions. I have the 10 litre version because I use a lot in cooking as well as drinking it

I did a lot of research before I bought this brand. I found that many others needed the filters replacing more often than WatersCo, which pushes the running costs up significantly.

WatersCo offer ZipPay to spread the cost interest-free.

Inovaair air filters

In my book, I recommend the use of air filters to remove toxins from the air. Toxins like Volatile Organic Compounds tend to accumulate in our homes and can damage our health.

The quality of air filters is very variable. I did a lot of research before buying mine and I believe that this brand is the best on the Australian market.

It contains a HEPA filter and an activated carbon filter. It also has a pre-filter that filters out large dust particles, so the main filters will last longer. This should be changed every 6 months or so, but is relatively inexpensive. The HEPA filter lasts 3-5 years in normal use and the activated carbon filter lasts 1-3 years depending on the quality of the air. This compares favourably with other brands, many of which don’t have a pre-filter. Their main filters can need changing every 6 months, which can make them very expensive.

The body of the filters is powder-coated aluminium rather than plastic, and the filters don’t contain any additives or glue, so they don’t contribute to the toxin levels in your home.

It’s also relatively quiet and energy efficient, which is important because it’s used around the clock.

I love our Inovaair air filter. It makes the house so much fresher. I can definitely tell the difference if it's turned off.

Adorn Cosmetics

I buy a lot of my makeup and skincare products from Adorn Cosmetics. Their products are organic, vegan, cruelty-free, Australian-made, and free from toxins and allergens. My skin is very sensitive, so this is important to me.

They have a good range and they offer tutorials on how to use their products. There is also an Adorner’s Exclusive Community on Facebook, where people share their experiences of the products and you can get advice from others on the products.

They offer AfterPay to spread the cost.

Uncommon Knowledge Hypnosis Recordings

In my book, I cover the benefits of clinical hypnosis for reducing anxiety in cancer patients, something that is backed by research.

I’ve been using a company called Uncommon Knowledge for hypnosis recordings, which work out less expensive than going to a professional hypnotherapist. Although I didn’t know about them during my own cancer journey, I have used them extensively for other reasons and I find them very effective.

The company is run by British psychologists, which means that they have the right background to produce effective hypnotherapy sessions. Their voices are soothing and I always finish a recording feeling very relaxed. If I use them each day for at least 7 days, as they are intended, they are very effective at achieving whatever they are designed for too.

They have 8 recordings on offer specifically for solving cancer problems:

  • Staying positive during cancer

  • Reducing chemo nausea

  • Reducing cancer pain

  • Coping with waiting for cancer test results

  • Calming the dread of cancer returning

  • Reducing discomfort and anxiety around needles and cannulas

  • Easing radiation treatment side effects

  • Restoring appetite lost during chemo.

If you buy more than one recording, you get a discount, reducing the already reasonable cost. And, of course, they can be used over and over. They offer a 90 day money-back guarantee, so if they don’t work for you (not everyone is susceptible to hypnosis), you haven’t lost anything. They can all be downloaded instantly too, so there’s no waiting for them to arrive by post.

They have an app available for iPad, iPhone and Android, so you can store your recordings in one place and listen to them offline.

Aquapure - produce purifier

With this unit, you can not only remove pesticide residues from the outside of your fruit and vegetables, you can also remove bacteria, viruses and fungi from them, and extend the life of the produce. On top of that, you can also make your own sanitising liquid for your hands and your surface cleaning.

I have one of these at home and I love it for the following reasons:

  • It works in 5-15 minutes, depending on the volume of water used.

  • It seems to do a wonderful job of cleaning my produce, as the water is pretty brown after it's worked its magic.

  • They have accredited lab test results confirming that it removes pesticides like glyphosate and some others, and they're getting tests done to confirm the rest. There's no question in my mind that it would be just as effective on them too.

  • The same lab has shown it almost completely eradicates harmful bacteria.

  • Fruit like apples that are often covered in Apeel™, which many people are concerned about, doesn't feel waxy after using the unit. This suggests that it has removed the Apeel™ as well as the pesticide residues that the Apeel™ probably covers.

  • The unit is compact enough to pack in my luggage when I go away.

  • It is rechargeable using a USB connection, so it's easy to recharge wherever in the world I am. But it works for about 10 cycles on one charge, anyway.

  • You don't need a special bowl to use it in, although it's best not to use it in metal bowls because it is slightly acidic.

  • You can make hand and surface sanitiser at home. It's best stored in small quantities, in a non-metallic container, out of direct sunlight. It's ideal for carrying in your handbag or pocket.

  • The electrolysed water won't irritate your skin or eyes, so it's safe around children.

  • The unit will last for years. It doesn't need any maintenance apart from a quick clean. The only extra expense is about 1-2 teaspoons of salt each time you use it.
